Agapanthus care

• Can be planted between April and May(early spring), or in between August and September (late summer).
• Plant in well-drained soil in a full sunny position.
• Are good in pots or containers.
• Considering the size of the plant and its roots, plant the smaller plant initially in a pot so it is easier to bring in a sheltered area throughout the colder season. Larger plants can be planted straight into the open soil/garden providing the soil conditions and location are right.
• Agapanthus are drought tolerant. Do water copiously though, throughout the flowering season but avoid poor drainage and waterlogged conditions.
• Deciduous agapanthus are hardier than the evergreen varieties. In well-drained conditions the deciduous varieties, once established in the open ground after a few growing seasons, can stand temperatures of down to -10 (although not for a very long period of time). The evergreen varieties are better protected in the colder areas or mulched in milder areas.
• Plants that do not flower or are over-crowded can be divided in late summer or in early spring. Agapanthus do not like to be re-potted in too big a pot as this will encourage leaf growth and not flower production. However it is a myth that agapanthus needs to be heavily root-bound for it to produce flowers.
• In short: give agapanthus maximum sunshine, feed it, protect it from heavy frost by either taking it in or mulching, divide the plant when necessary!
