Dahlias are one of many flowering bulbs that enhance your garden once they start flowering in the summer. Brash and blowsy like ‘Jennifer’s Wedding’ in a rich magenta colour or the true red of ‘Manhattan Island’. Maybe something more timid and shy like ‘Diana’s Memory’ in a lovely pale pink. Pompom varieties include the striking orange ‘New Baby’. Wow the list goes on! Plenty of choice to give your garden, borders or patio a spectacular display of colour throughout summer and beyond, long after most other flowers have faded.

Dahlia tubers should be planted in Spring, in the ground once the chance of frost has passed, in well-drained soil and a sunny location. Alternatively, they can be started off earlier in pots and kept in a protected frost-free environment, until ready to go out.

As we said before there are many varieties of dahlias that come in different shapes, sizes, heights and colours. Some are the size of a dinner plate, others smaller or globular pompom varieties. Also, some very delicate looking flowering ones such as the Anemone dahlias, of which ‘Blue Bayou’ and ‘Kelsey Anne Joy’ are an example.

Dahlia tubers are best planted in the open ground, but with so many different varieties available there are also ones suitable for large pots and planters on your patio.

Don’t forget dahlias make excellent cut flowers too, gracing any home with their cheerful colours and shapes! As you keep picking the flowers the tubers will keep producing more and more flowers.

Once the growing season is over, usually after the first frost or very cold night, these tender tubers need to be lifted and stored in a frost-free environment until they are planted out again the following Spring, once more giving a splendid display for you to enjoy!
